Alternatives
Ethane dinitrile
1. BACKGROUND
Summary
CyanogenTM, also referred to as ethane dinitrile, is showing promising results as an alternative fumigant to MB for soil disinfestation in trials in Australia, on fruit and carrots (Ren et al., 2003; Mattner et al., 2003)
Product characteristics
- Composition : C2N2
- Appearance : Bitter almond odor
- Boiling point : - 21.2 °C
- Vapor pressure 20°C : 4.8 bars
- Cyanogen has a high vapour pressure and does not persist long in soils.
2. APPLICATION DIRECTIONS
Preliminary results show efficacy against soil born pathogens and weeds, but it has not been tested extensively against nematodes (Mattner et al., 2003). However, application technologies need to be developed to increase its retention time in soils to provide adequate exposure times against some pests.
3. EXPERIMENTAL PERMITS AND REGISTRATION
In Europe, development in fields are pending in Spain in strawberry runners (López-Aranda et al., 2006, López-Aranda et al., 2007) at 400kg/ha of active ingredient.
